Michael Crowgey, MD
Integrative Physician
Michael grew up on a farm in southwest Virginia a few hours north of Asheville. Seeking an alternate path after graduating with a degree in business from the University of Virginia, Michael moved to Japan to teach English. While in Japan, he became interested in food as medicine.
After returning stateside, Michael pursued his interest in San Francisco as a grocery buyer. His experience in that role helped him realize his passion was to help people improve their health through lifestyle changes. This led to his decision to pursue medicine.
Michael attended Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and knew, from the beginning of his training, that he wanted to become a Family Medicine physician. Michael did his residency training in Asheville at MAHEC and then completed a yearlong residential fellowship at the University of Arizona to further explore his interests in Integrative Medicine. He is in the process of becoming board-eligible for a certification in Integrative Medicine. Michael has returned to Asheville to build relationships, community, and a career as a provider at Integrative Family Medicine of Asheville.
Michael is interested in lifestyle as medicine. He enjoys working together with patients to tailor adjustments in diet, exercise, sleep, substance use, and mindfulness practices. While he is curious about all medical topics, he has specific interests in disorders of the GI tract, chronic fatigue, anxiety/depression, mind/body medicine, preventative care, supplements/herbs, wilderness medicine, and urgent care among many other topics.
Michael takes pride in calling the Blue Ridge Mountains home. He enjoys the outdoors and likes hiking, biking, and trail running. Michael delights in tasty, healthy cooking and prepares most of his own meals. He subscribes to the idea that healthy food prepared with thoughtfulness nourishes the soul. Gardening, watching documentaries and podcasts, and spending time with family and friends fills up his time outside of work.
